You answer the first quant question in 40 seconds and feel good. The second one is harder. The third is harder still. By question ten you are sweating, and you can't go back to check a single answer.
That is NMAT working as designed. The test adapts: each right answer brings a tougher question, and each wrong one brings an easier question. You can't review, you can't skip and return, and each section has its own clock. Students who prepare for it like a fixed paper get confused by their scores. Students who learn how the test behaves find it one of the fairest exams in the season.
Quick answer: To crack 99+ percentile in NMAT, you need a total of about 255 or more out of 360 on GMAC's percentile table, which is an average of 85 in each section. Answer all 108 questions, protect the first ten of each section, finish each section inside its own timer, and take 14 to 16 mocks, including GMAC's official practice tests.

What does a 99+ percentile in NMAT mean?
A 99 percentile means you scored higher than 99 out of every 100 NMAT test takers. GMAC builds its table from every person who sat the test in the cycle. The latest table covers 53,271 test takers, so a 99 percentile places you among the top 530 or so.
NMAT differs from the other MBA exams in one useful way: colleges read your score, and they set their cutoffs as scores out of 360. NMIMS Mumbai, the top college in the NMAT list, shortlists at about 235. So the question that matters for admission is "what score does my college need", and the percentile is a way to see how rare that score is.
NMAT exam pattern and marking scheme
| Section | Questions | Time | Score range | Time for each question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Language Skills | 36 | 28 minutes | 12 to 120 | About 47 seconds |
| Quantitative Skills | 36 | 52 minutes | 12 to 120 | About 87 seconds |
| Logical Reasoning | 36 | 40 minutes | 12 to 120 | About 67 seconds |
| Total | 108 | 120 minutes | 36 to 360 |
Five rules shape your strategy.
- No negative marking. Answer every question.
- You choose the section order at the start of the test.
- Each section has its own timer. Time saved in one section doesn't carry to the next.
- You can't go back. Once you confirm an answer, the question is gone.
- The test adapts to your answers.

How the adaptive test works
In a fixed paper, everyone sees the same questions. In NMAT, the next question depends on how you answered the ones before it.
- Answer correctly and the test serves a harder question.
- Answer wrongly and the test serves an easier one.
- Your scaled score reflects the difficulty level you held as well as the count of correct answers.
Three habits follow from this.
- Slow down at the start of each section. Your early answers set the level of the questions that follow. Rushing the first eight to ten questions is the most expensive mistake in NMAT.
- Expect it to feel hard. A section that gets tougher means you are doing well. Don't panic when it does.
- Finish the section. A blank scores nothing, so a guess can only help. If a question holds you past twice its time, pick your best option and move.
Two people with the same number of correct answers can get different scores. GMAC doesn't publish a conversion from correct answers to scaled scores, so treat any "you need 68 correct for 240" figure as a rough guide.

What NMAT score do you need for 99 percentile?
GMAC publishes an official percentile ranking table. It is the only official score-to-percentile table among the big MBA entrance exams, so you don't need to rely on estimates here.
| Percentile | Total score out of 360 |
|---|---|
| 99 | 255 to 265 |
| 98 | 250 to 254 |
| 97 | 246 to 249 |
| 96 | 244 to 245 |
| 95 | 242 to 243 |
| 90 | 233 to 234 |
| 85 | 227 |
| 80 | 223 |
| About 70 | 215 |
| About 50 | 200 to 201 |
Source: GMAC's NMAT percentile rankings on mba.com, based on 53,271 test takers in the latest cycle. A total above 265 sits above the 99th percentile.
You will find older tables on many websites that put 240 at the 99th percentile. On GMAC's latest table, 240 falls at about the 94th percentile, and the 99th starts at 255. The competition moved up. Plan with the official table.
A 255 means an average of 85 in each section. One realistic split:
| Section | Target score |
|---|---|
| Language Skills | 90 |
| Logical Reasoning | 85 |
| Quantitative Skills | 80 |
| Total | 255 |
Quant is the toughest section for most test takers, so the split asks a little less of it and a little more of Language.

Do you need 99 percentile for NMIMS Mumbai?
No. NMIMS Mumbai's cutoff has been about 235, which sits near the 91st percentile on GMAC's table. NMIMS also sets a minimum for each section. A score of 240 or more with balanced sections gives you a comfortable margin. A 255 puts you clear of every NMAT college's cutoff.
Chase the higher score anyway if you can. It protects you from a cutoff rise, and it keeps your options open across every college on the list.
NMAT syllabus: the topics that carry the most marks
| Section | Topics to study first |
|---|---|
| Language Skills | Reading comprehension, fill in the blanks, error detection, sentence correction, synonyms and antonyms, para jumbles, idioms, prepositions, word analogies |
| Quantitative Skills | Percentages and profit, ratio and averages, time, speed and work, interest, number system, equations, data interpretation, data sufficiency, probability, geometry and mensuration |
| Logical Reasoning | Arrangements, grid puzzles, syllogisms, critical reasoning, coding and decoding, series, blood relations, direction sense, statement and conclusion, course of action |
A recent paper broke down like this, by the analysis in Crack NMAT in 60 Days:
| Section | What came in 36 questions |
|---|---|
| Language Skills | 3 RC passages with 4 questions each, 10 fill in the blanks, 5 error spotting, 5 analogies, 4 para jumbles |
| Quantitative Skills | 10 arithmetic, 8 DI in two sets, 5 data sufficiency, 5 modern maths, 4 algebra, 4 number system |
| Logical Reasoning | Verbal reasoning such as course of action, assumptions and conclusions made up most of the section, with arrangements, input-output and Venn diagrams after that |
Vocabulary and grammar give about half the Language section. Arithmetic, DI and data sufficiency give most of Quant. Data sufficiency needs its own practice, since CAT preparation skips it.
Section-wise strategy to score 99+ percentile in NMAT
The test decides which question you see next, and you can't skip one and return. So read each table below as a time budget for the kinds of questions you will meet, and hold yourself to it.
Language Skills: 36 questions in 28 minutes
This is the fastest section and, for most people, the easiest. Use it to bank a high score.
| Minutes | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0 to 10 | Vocabulary, grammar and idiom questions as they come, about 30 seconds each |
| 10 to 24 | Reading comprehension and para jumbles |
| 24 to 28 | Best answers for anything left |
- A vocabulary question takes 15 seconds if you know the word. If you don't, pick your best option and go.
- For RC, read the questions first, then the passage.
- In fill in the blanks, check the grammar of your choice last. An option can fit the meaning and still take the wrong preposition.
- Learn 20 new words a day. A list of 600 or more words by test day is a fair target.
Quantitative Skills: 36 questions in 52 minutes
Quant decides the gap between a 235 and a 255.
| Minutes | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0 to 35 | Arithmetic and algebra at a steady pace |
| 35 to 48 | DI sets and data sufficiency |
| 48 to 52 | Answers for anything left |
- You have about 87 seconds for each question. Past twice that, choose and move.
- In data sufficiency, decide whether you can solve. Don't solve.
- In DI, approximate. The options tend to sit far apart.
- Keep your rough sheet neat and write each step. NMAT quant is heavy on calculation, and most errors are slips.
Logical Reasoning: 36 questions in 40 minutes
| Minutes | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0 to 15 | Series, coding, blood relations, direction sense |
| 15 to 30 | Syllogisms, critical reasoning, statement questions |
| 30 to 40 | Arrangements and puzzles |
- One-line questions take 30 to 40 seconds each. Save the time for puzzles.
- For a puzzle set, draw the grid first.
- In critical reasoning, separate an assumption (unstated, needed) from an inference (must be true).
- In course-of-action questions, pick the practical step that solves the stated problem. Extreme steps are rarely right.

Which section order should you choose?
GMAC lets you pick any of the six orders. Try two or three in your first four mocks and fix the one that gives your best total.
| Order | Suits you if |
|---|---|
| Strongest section first | You want early confidence. Most students choose this |
| Quant first | Quant drains you and you want it done while you are fresh |
| Language first | You want a quick, calm start before the long sections |
Don't change your order on test day. The NMAT section order and timing guide compares all six.
Attempts: your first score matters most
You can take NMAT up to three times in a cycle: one first attempt and two retakes, each with its own fee. Each college decides which score it uses.
| College policy | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| NMIMS | Uses only your first valid NMAT score, according to GMAC's help centre |
| Other schools | Many accept your best or latest score. Check each one |
If NMIMS is your target, your first attempt is your only attempt. Book your slot after three or four strong mocks, and not before. Booking too early to "see how it goes" can cost you your top-choice college. The NMAT retake strategy guide covers when a second attempt makes sense.

How long does it take to prepare for NMAT?
| Your situation | Time needed | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| You prepared for CAT | 3 to 4 weeks | Vocabulary, grammar, data sufficiency, speed and adaptive mocks |
| You start fresh, with good basics | About 60 days at 4 to 6 hours a day | Arithmetic, grammar rules, reasoning one-liners, then mocks |
| You start fresh as a beginner | 3 to 4 months at 2 to 3 hours a day | School-level maths and grammar first |
You choose your test date, so your plan starts from the date you book. Count back from it. If you are choosing between speed exams, SNAP vs NMAT compares the two side by side.
A four-phase study plan for NMAT
| Phase | Goal | Main work | Mocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build | Fix basics | Arithmetic, grammar rules, series and coding, 20 words a day | A diagnostic mock, then two more to test section orders |
| 2. Strengthen | Add the slower topics | DI, data sufficiency, puzzles, syllogisms, sectional tests | One every five days |
| 3. Convert | Fix order and pace | Mocks, section-order tests, weak topics | One every two days |
| 4. Perform | Peak on your booked date | Mocks at your slot time, speed drills, revision | Two in the last week |
A day for a full-time student:
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 7 to 9 am | Quant: concepts and 30 questions |
| 9:30 to 11 am | Reasoning: two puzzle sets and 20 one-liners |
| 11:30 am to 12:30 pm | Language: grammar and 20 new words |
| 4 to 5 pm | Two RC passages and para jumbles |
| 8 to 9 pm | Revision and error log |
A working professional can cover the same ground in three hours: quant from 6 to 7 am, 20 words and one RC at lunch, reasoning from 9 to 10 pm, and a full mock with analysis on the weekend.
How many mocks should you take for NMAT?
Take 14 to 16 full mocks. Use GMAC's official practice tests for some of them, since their interface is the closest to the real test. Sit each mock at the same hour as your booked slot.
| Time | Task on a mock day |
|---|---|
| 2 hours | The mock, under test conditions |
| 30 minutes | Break |
| 1 hour | Solve the wrong and guessed questions again |
| 1 hour | Analysis sheet and error log |
Track these lines after each mock: total score, three section scores, questions guessed, time left in each section, easy questions you got wrong, your slowest topic and the section order you used.
Your test-day plan for NMAT
- Reach the centre before your reporting time, with your admit card and photo ID.
- Choose the section order you fixed in mocks.
- Give the first ten questions of each section extra care.
- Leave nothing blank. In the last minute of a section, answer whatever remains.
- Once a section ends, drop it from your mind.
Your scorecard arrives within about 48 hours. Note your three section scores, check them against your target colleges, and decide on a retake within a week.

Seven mistakes that keep your score down
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Booking the test too early | Book after three or four strong mocks |
| 2 | Leaving questions blank | There is no negative marking, so answer all 108 |
| 3 | Rushing the first questions | Your early answers set the level |
| 4 | Ignoring data sufficiency | One DS set a day |
| 5 | No vocabulary plan | 20 words a day |
| 6 | Changing section order on test day | Use the order you fixed in mocks |
| 7 | Letting one puzzle eat the section | Cap a puzzle at three minutes, then mark your best answer |
Frequently asked questions
What NMAT score is 99 percentile?
On GMAC's latest official percentile table, a total of 255 to 265 out of 360 is the 99th percentile, and a total above 265 sits higher still. Older tables that show 240 as the 99th percentile no longer hold; 240 is about the 94th percentile now.
What is a good score in NMAT?
A total of 235 or more has matched NMIMS Mumbai's cutoff in the latest cycle, and 240 or more gives you a margin. A 220 keeps NMIMS Bengaluru, K J Somaiya, TAPMI and Great Lakes in range. A 255 clears every NMAT college's cutoff.
Is there negative marking in NMAT?
No. A wrong answer and a blank both score nothing, so you should answer all 108 questions. In the last minute of each section, mark an option for any question that remains.
Is NMAT an adaptive test?
Yes. The difficulty of each question depends on how you answered the earlier ones. Correct answers bring harder questions and wrong answers bring easier ones. You can't return to a question after you answer it.
How many attempts does NMAT allow?
You can take NMAT up to three times in a testing cycle: one first attempt and two retakes. Each attempt has its own fee. Each college decides which score it considers, and NMIMS uses only your first valid score.
Can I calculate my NMAT score from my correct answers?
Not exactly. NMAT is adaptive and scaled, so the same number of correct answers can produce different scores. GMAC doesn't publish a conversion. Your scaled section scores appear on the score report you receive after the test.
Is NMAT easier than CAT?
The questions are easier, and there is no negative marking. The difficulty lies in pace: 108 questions in 120 minutes, separate section timers and no way to go back. Vocabulary and data sufficiency also need practice that CAT preparation doesn't give.
Which section should I attempt first in NMAT?
Most students start with their strongest section to build confidence. Some take Quant first while they are fresh. Test two or three orders in your first four mocks, keep the one with the best total, and don't change it on test day.
How long does it take to prepare for NMAT?
About 60 days at four to six hours a day is enough if your basics are sound. CAT aspirants need three to four weeks for vocabulary, data sufficiency and adaptive mocks. Beginners should allow three to four months.
Do I need 99 percentile for NMIMS Mumbai?
No. NMIMS Mumbai's cutoff of about 235 falls near the 91st percentile on GMAC's table. You also need to clear the sectional cutoffs NMIMS sets, and NMIMS counts only your first attempt. Aim for 240 or more in that first attempt.
