Your NMAT scorecard arrives two days after the test: 218. A decent score, not the 235 you were hoping for. You have two retakes available, and the obvious move seems to be to book one and push for NMIMS Mumbai.
Stop before you pay. For NMIMS, your retake score won't count at all. NMIMS uses only your first valid NMAT score, according to GMAC's help centre. That one rule changes how you should think about every NMAT attempt, and it's the first thing to check before you retake.
Quick answer: NMAT allows up to three attempts in a cycle, but each school decides which score it uses. NMIMS uses only your first valid score, so a retake can't improve your NMIMS chances. Retake only if your score is below target for schools that accept your best or latest score, and only after two weeks of work on your weakest section.
How NMAT attempts work
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Attempts per cycle | Up to 3 (1 first attempt + 2 retakes) |
| Retake fee | Same as the first attempt (₹3,000 + taxes in the 2026 cycle) |
| Scorecard | Usually within about 48 hours of your test |
| Which score a school uses | Each school sets its own rule |
| NMIMS | Uses only your first valid score |

The NMIMS rule, and what it means for you
If NMIMS (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai or Hyderabad) is on your list, your first NMAT attempt is your NMIMS attempt. You can still retake for other schools, but your NMIMS application will carry the first score.
Three practical consequences:
- Don't book your first NMAT as a trial run. Book it only after three or four solid mocks.
- Don't book it too early in the window only to "get it out of the way". A few extra weeks of preparation can be worth more than a free retake later.
- If NMIMS is your main target and your first score is below their range, a retake won't fix that. Put the energy into other exams and other schools instead.
Policies can change between cycles, so read NMIMS's admission page and GMAC's NMAT FAQ for the current year before you book.
Is your score worth a retake?
| First score | Suggested decision |
|---|---|
| 240 or more | Done. Focus on applications and interviews. |
| 225 to 239 | Retake only for schools that accept your best score, and only if you have a clear weak section to fix. |
| 210 to 224 | Consider a retake after two weeks of targeted work, for schools that accept your best score. |
| Below 210 | Retake after a full rebuild of your weakest section, or put more weight on SNAP, CAT or other exams. |
Based on NMAT 2025 score bands in Crack NMAT in 60 Days: about 236 to 244 matched the 99th percentile, 226 to 228 about the 95th, and 220 to 222 about the 90th. These are estimates; GMAC doesn't publish an official percentile table for each score.
A useful rule from students who have retaken NMAT: a retake is worth it if you can realistically gain at least 20 to 25 points. Smaller gains rarely change which schools call you (InsideIIM).

Read your scorecard before deciding
Your NMAT scorecard shows a scaled score for each section (12 to 120) and a total (36 to 360). Look at the three section scores before anything else.
| Section | Rough target for top NMAT schools |
|---|---|
| Quantitative Skills | About 70 to 75 |
| Logical Reasoning | About 65 to 70 |
| Language Skills | About 62 to 65 |

If one section is far below the others, that's your retake project. If all three are evenly low, a retake two weeks later probably won't move you much. You may need a longer rebuild.
What to change before a retake
Retaking with the same preparation usually gives you the same score. Change these things:
- Your weakest section. Two weeks of daily practice on it, 30 to 40 questions a day.
- Your section order. NMAT lets you choose the order at the start of the test. If your first attempt started with your weakest section, try your strongest first. The NMAT section order guide explains how to test this.
- Your first ten questions in each section. NMAT is adaptive, so the level of later questions depends on how you answer the early ones. Slow down slightly at the start of each section.
- Data Sufficiency. NMAT Quant includes several DS questions. Many students lose them by solving fully instead of checking sufficiency.
- Blanks. NMAT has no negative marking. If you left any question unanswered when a timer ran out, fix your pacing so it never happens again.
A two-week retake plan
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Rest. Read your scorecard. Pick the weakest section. |
| 2 to 5 | Weakest section: 30 to 40 questions a day, plus one sectional |
| 6 | Full NMAT mock with a new section order |
| 7 | Mock analysis and error log |
| 8 to 11 | Weakest section continued; 20 minutes a day on the other two |
| 12 | Full mock with your final section order |
| 13 | Analysis, formula sheet, word list |
| 14 | Light practice, then the retake (or the day after) |
Use the official GMAC practice tests for at least one of these mocks. Their interface is closest to the real test.

When a retake is the wrong move
- Your main target is NMIMS. The retake won't count there.
- Your first score already sits in the range for your target schools.
- You can't name one specific thing you'll do differently.
- A retake would fall in the same week as CAT, SNAP or XAT. Protect your bigger exams.
Frequently asked questions
How many times can I take NMAT?
You can take NMAT up to three times in a testing cycle: one first attempt and two retakes. Each attempt has its own fee. Each school decides which of your scores it considers.
Does NMIMS accept NMAT retake scores?
No. NMIMS uses only your first valid NMAT score, according to GMAC's help centre. If NMIMS is your main target, prepare well before your first attempt.
What is a good NMAT score to avoid a retake?
A score of about 240 or more has matched roughly the 99th percentile in recent data, and about 226 to 228 matched the 95th. If your score is already in your target schools' range, a retake usually isn't worth the effort.
How long should I wait before retaking NMAT?
About two weeks is a sensible gap. That's enough time to fix your weakest section and test a new section order in two full mocks. Book within the retake window GMAC sets for your cycle.
Will a lower retake score hurt my application?
Schools that accept your best score use your highest one. For schools with other rules, check their policy before you retake. NMIMS uses your first score regardless of later attempts.
