A signpost pointing to six coloured MBA exams under the headline "Which exams are yours?"

You've got CAT on your calendar, and everyone around you is adding exams. One friend is taking five. Another says SNAP is a waste unless you want Pune. Your parents read that MBA CET is "only for Maharashtra people". Registration windows are closing, and each exam costs a few thousand rupees.

The right set of exams depends on two things: the colleges you want, and the profile you bring. Your home state, your academic record and the time you have all change the answer. This guide works from your target colleges backwards, so you register for exams that open real doors instead of collecting scorecards.

Quick answer: Choose exams by the colleges you want. For IIMs, take CAT. Add XAT for XLRI and as a second shot at many CAT schools. Add SNAP for Symbiosis and NMAT for NMIMS. If you have a Maharashtra domicile, take MBA CET for JBIMS, SIMSREE and PUMBA. Most students do well with three or four exams.

Start from your target colleges

If you want... Take Notes
IIMs, FMS Delhi, MDI, IIFT, IIT business schools CAT The main exam for all of them
XLRI Jamshedpur or Delhi XAT XLRI's programmes need XAT for Indian candidates
XIM, IMT, MICA, GIM, IRMA, TAPMI XAT (many also accept CAT) Check each school's list
SPJIMR CAT, XAT or GMAT Profile-heavy selection
SIBM Pune, SCMHRD and other Symbiosis institutes SNAP Symbiosis uses only SNAP
NMIMS Mumbai, Bengaluru and other campuses NMAT NMIMS uses only your first NMAT score
K J Somaiya, XIM, TAPMI, Great Lakes NMAT (several accept other exams too) Check each school's page
JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA (Maharashtra State seats) MAH MBA CET Seats allotted through CAP on score alone
JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA (all-India seats) CAT, CMAT, XAT or MAH CET Through CAP's all-India quota
Many AICTE-approved institutes CMAT Wide acceptance, single attempt

Then adjust for your profile

If you have a Maharashtra domicile

Take MAH MBA CET. It gives you access to the state quota at JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA and more than 300 other colleges, and CAP allots seats on your score alone, with no group discussion, interview or academic weighting. For Maharashtra students, MBA CET is often the best value exam of the season.

If your academics are weak

Some selection processes weigh your entrance score far more than your past marks:

  • MBA CET and CMAT through CAP: merit is based on the entrance score only.
  • SNAP at SIBM Pune: the 2026 selection formula gives SNAP 50 percent, the interview 40 percent and the group exercise 10 percent, with no weight for past academic marks.
  • CAT for FMS, MDI, IIFT and some IIT schools: shortlists lean heavily on the CAT score (Crack CAT in 60 Days; check each school's policy).

Add these exams to your list, and prepare a clear story for interviews about what changed since college.

If you're working full-time

Pick exams with overlapping syllabi so one preparation serves several papers. CAT plus XAT shares most of its syllabus. NMAT lets you book your own slot inside its testing window, which helps around work deadlines. Three exams is usually the practical maximum. The CAT plan for working professionals shows a weekday and weekend timetable.

If you're fast but make careless mistakes

Exams with no negative marking, NMAT and MBA CET, will feel kinder. SNAP rewards speed but penalises wrong answers, so its accuracy demand is higher.

If you're careful but slow

CAT and XAT reward accuracy and question selection more than speed. You can leave many questions and still score well. MBA CET will feel rushed, so train speed early if you're taking it.

Common combinations that work

Profile Suggested exams
IIM-focused, from outside Maharashtra CAT + XAT + one of SNAP or NMAT
IIM-focused, Maharashtra domicile CAT + XAT + MBA CET
Mumbai and Pune private schools NMAT + SNAP + CAT (+ MBA CET if Maharashtra domicile)
Weak academics, strong test-taker CAT + MBA CET or CMAT + SNAP
Working professional, limited time CAT + XAT, or CAT + NMAT
Wants maximum options CAT + XAT + SNAP + NMAT + CMAT or MBA CET

How many exams is too many?

Each extra exam costs a registration fee, a few weeks of mock rhythm, and attention you could spend elsewhere. Signs you've taken on too many:

  • Two exams fall in the same week.
  • You can't take at least three or four mocks of each exam's format before its test.
  • Your main exam's mock scores start falling.

For most students, three or four exams is the useful range. One preparation, built around CAT, covers most of the syllabus. Each extra exam needs about two weeks of format-specific practice on top: Decision Making for XAT, speed and Ethics for SNAP, sectional timing for NMAT, GK and Innovation & Entrepreneurship for CMAT, and speed for MBA CET.

Check the season before you register

The exams usually fall in this order: NMAT's window (November to December), CAT (late November), SNAP (December, three tests), XAT (early January), CMAT (late January or early February) and MBA CET (March to May, two attempts). Book NMAT and SNAP slots so they don't land in the same week as CAT or XAT.

Registration deadlines come weeks or months before each exam and change every year. The free MBA entrance exam calendar 2026–27 puts the season on one page.

Frequently asked questions

How many MBA entrance exams should I take?

Three or four is the right number for most students. Build your preparation around CAT, then add the exams that lead to your target colleges. More exams spread your mocks thin without adding many useful options.

Is CAT enough for a good MBA?

CAT alone covers the IIMs and many top schools, but it doesn't cover XLRI (XAT), Symbiosis (SNAP) or NMIMS (NMAT). Adding one or two of these gives you more options and a second chance if CAT goes badly.

Should I take MBA CET if I'm not from Maharashtra?

You can apply for the all-India seats in Maharashtra's CAP, and those seats also accept CAT and CMAT scores. If you already have a strong CAT or CMAT score, you may not need MBA CET. Maharashtra domicile students benefit most from it.

Which MBA exams are best for students with low academic scores?

MBA CET and CMAT through Maharashtra's CAP use only your entrance score. SNAP at SIBM Pune gives no weight to past academic marks in its 2026 formula. Some CAT schools such as FMS also lean heavily on the CAT score.

Can I take CAT, XAT, SNAP and NMAT in the same season?

Yes. They usually run from November to early January, and their syllabi overlap. Book NMAT and SNAP tests so they don't clash with CAT or XAT, and take a few mocks in each exam's format.
