You're preparing for CAT, and someone in your study group says, "Of course you're writing XAT too." You nod, then open the XAT syllabus and find a section called Decision Making, a General Knowledge part, and a rule that takes marks away for leaving questions blank. Now you're not sure.
For most CAT students, adding XAT is one of the best decisions of the season. The two exams share most of their syllabus, XAT comes about five weeks after CAT, and it opens doors that CAT doesn't, starting with XLRI. You need to know what changes between the two papers and how to switch modes after CAT.
Quick answer: CAT is a 2-hour exam with three timed sections and +3/−1 marking, used by the IIMs and many top schools. XAT is a 3-hour exam run by XLRI with a Decision Making section, five options per question, −0.25 for wrong answers and a skip penalty after 8 blanks. Most CAT preparation carries over, so most serious CAT students should take XAT too.

Which is tougher, CAT or XAT?
They are hard in different ways, so the answer depends on your strengths.
- XAT Quant is usually tougher and longer. Expect lengthy calculations, harder geometry, and a little trigonometry. XAT 2026 had about 5 to 6 geometry questions.
- XAT has Decision Making. No other major MBA exam has it. It rewards clear, rule-based thinking more than raw knowledge.
- CAT has DILR. The 40-minute DILR section is the toughest part of CAT for many students, and XAT has no equivalent.
- CAT VARC uses denser passages. XAT verbal adds poems and unusual short texts, and options that are very close to each other.
- CAT's timer is stricter. Forty minutes per section, no switching. XAT lets you plan your own time across Part 1.
Most students find XAT's paper tougher question by question, and CAT's format more stressful. Because every candidate in a slot faces the same paper, a tougher paper lowers the marks needed for each percentile.
Which colleges accept CAT and which accept XAT?
| Accept CAT | Accept XAT |
|---|---|
| All IIMs | XLRI Jamshedpur and XLRI Delhi |
| FMS Delhi | XIM University, Bhubaneswar |
| MDI Gurgaon | IMT Ghaziabad |
| IIFT | MICA |
| SJMSOM IIT Bombay, DMS IIT Delhi | GIM Goa, IMI New Delhi |
| SPJIMR (also takes XAT and GMAT) | Great Lakes, TAPMI, IRMA, LIBA |
Many schools accept both, including SPJIMR, IMT, MICA, Great Lakes and TAPMI. Check each school's admission page for the current year.
XAT matters most if XLRI is on your list. XLRI's Business Management and HRM programmes take XAT for Indian candidates, and XLRI has some of the strongest placements outside the older IIMs.
How much of your CAT preparation carries over?
Most of it. One coaching institute's estimate puts the overlap at about 95 percent of XAT Quant and about 85 percent of XAT verbal covered by CAT preparation (IMS Indore). What you add for XAT:
- Decision Making. About 21 caselets in the paper. Start practising two a day well before CAT.
- Harder Quant. Geometry, mensuration, basic trigonometry and lengthy DI sets.
- Poems and critical reasoning in the verbal section.
- General Knowledge. Twenty questions in about ten minutes. GK doesn't count toward your XAT percentile, but some schools use it later in selection.
- The skip rule. Plan to leave at most 8 questions blank in Part 1.

How to prepare for both in one season
CAT is usually held in late November and XAT in early January, which leaves about five weeks between them. Use the time in two blocks.
Before CAT:
- Keep CAT as your main focus.
- Add two DM caselets a day. That's about 20 minutes, and it keeps the skill growing.
- Register for XAT before the deadline, even if you're unsure. You can decide later whether to sit it.
After CAT:
- Take one day off, then switch fully to XAT mode.
- Move DM to the top of your daily plan.
- Add geometry, trigonometry basics and long DI sets to Quant.
- Start a 20-minute daily GK routine.
- Take 3-hour mocks in the afternoon, at XAT's usual timing, and practise your skip count.
The full five-week switch is in the XAT after CAT guide.
Should you take XAT if CAT went well?
Yes, if XLRI or any XAT-only school is on your list. A great CAT score doesn't get you into XLRI. And if CAT went badly, XAT is your second shot at many of the same schools, with a different paper and a different set of strengths tested.
Frequently asked questions
Is XAT tougher than CAT?
XAT's Quant and Decision Making questions are usually tougher and longer than CAT's, while CAT's DILR section and strict sectional timer make CAT stressful in its own way. Your difficulty depends on your strengths. Most students find the two similar in overall challenge.
Can I prepare for CAT and XAT together?
Yes. CAT preparation covers most of XAT's Quant and verbal syllabus. Add two Decision Making caselets a day before CAT, then spend the weeks between CAT and XAT on DM, harder geometry, GK and full XAT mocks.
Does XAT have negative marking?
Yes. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. XAT also deducts 0.10 marks for every unanswered question after the first 8 in Part 1. The GK section has no negative marking.
Which colleges accept XAT but not CAT?
XLRI Jamshedpur and XLRI Delhi are the main schools that require XAT, along with schools like XIM University, IRMA and several others that prefer it. Many top schools such as SPJIMR, IMT and MICA accept both.
Is the XAT score needed for 99 percentile lower than CAT?
The numbers aren't comparable because the marking differs. XAT gives +1 per correct answer out of 75 in Part 1, while CAT gives +3 per correct answer out of 204. In XAT 2026, about 37 to 41 net marks gave roughly 99 percentile.
