You scored 99.2 percentile and felt done. Then the CAP cutoffs came out: JBIMS closed at 99.99, SIMSREE at 99.97, and the college you could reach sat eight places down the list.
MBA CET is the one exam where 99 percentile is where the real race begins. The top government colleges in Mumbai sit between 99.9 and 99.99, and the gap between those two numbers is about ten marks. To win those marks you need speed: 200 questions in 150 minutes, with no penalty for a wrong answer and no reason to leave a single bubble empty.
Quick answer: To crack 99+ percentile in MAH MBA CET, you need about 124 to 133 marks out of 200. For 99.9 you need about 145 to 152, and for JBIMS about 155 or more. Solve 150 to 170 questions at 85 percent accuracy, start with Abstract Reasoning and Verbal, hold a 60-second limit for each question, and mark an answer for each blank.

What does a 99+ percentile in MBA CET mean?
At 99 percentile, you scored more than 99 out of every 100 candidates. The exam runs in several slots, so the State CET Cell converts raw marks into a normalised percentile.
More than a lakh candidates sit MBA CET in a typical year. One percent of that is over a thousand people. JBIMS has far fewer seats than that, which is the reason its cutoff runs to two decimals.
Read the college list by its decimals:
| Percentile | Roughly where it takes you |
|---|---|
| 99.99 | JBIMS, all-India seats |
| 99.97 | SIMSREE |
| 99.9 | WeSchool, with XIMR and SIES close behind |
| 99.6 to 99.8 | PUMBA, Chetana's |
| 98 to 99 | K J Somaiya |
| 95 to 98 | MET, Thakur, N L Dalmia |
Maharashtra state seats close a little lower than all-India seats. JBIMS's state cutoff has been about 99.94.
MBA CET exam pattern and marking scheme
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Logical Reasoning | 75 | 75 |
| Abstract Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 50 | 50 |
| Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension | 50 | 50 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
The rules that set your strategy:
- 150 minutes for 200 questions: 45 seconds for each.
- No sectional time limit and no sectional cutoff.
- Five options for each question.
- No negative marking. A wrong answer and a blank both score zero.
- Two attempts in a cycle, with the better score counted.
Reasoning is half the paper. Logical and Abstract Reasoning together carry 100 of the 200 marks, so a student who is quick at puzzles and figures starts with an edge.

How many marks do you need for 99 percentile in MBA CET?
About 124 to 133 marks out of 200 have matched the 99th percentile across the last three results.
| Percentile | Marks out of 200 |
|---|---|
| 99.99 | 155 to 165 |
| 99.9 | 145 to 152 |
| 99.5 | 135 to 140 |
| 99 | 124 to 133 |
| 98 | 120 to 125 |
| 97 | 115 to 120 |
| 95 | 110 to 115 |
| 90 | 95 to 100 |
| 80 | 82 to 86 |
| 70 | 74 to 77 |
Estimates compiled from Cracku, CollegeDekho and MBAUniverse. The ranges cover easier and tougher slots.
Two readings of this table matter.
First, 99 percentile sits near 130 marks, which is 65 percent of the paper. The questions are easy to moderate. The clock is the hard part.
Second, look at how the marks climb above 99. From 99 to 99.5 costs about 9 marks. From 99.5 to 99.9 costs about 11 more. From 99.9 to 99.99 costs another 11 or so. If your target is JBIMS, you are aiming for 155 or more, and a mock target of 135 won't get you there.
The marks for a 99 have stayed close to 130 for several years, steadier than in any other exam on this list. That makes planning simple: 135 or more in mocks for a safe 99, 150 or more for the 99.9 colleges, 160 for JBIMS.

How many questions should you solve in MBA CET for 99 percentile?
There is no negative marking, so you answer all 200. The real question is how many you solve properly before you start marking the rest.
| Questions solved | Accuracy | Correct | Rough percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 170 | 85 percent | 145 | About 99.9 |
| 160 | 85 percent | 136 | About 99.5 |
| 150 | 85 percent | 128 | 99 |
| 140 | 85 percent | 119 | About 97 |
| 125 | 80 percent | 100 | About 90 |

Then add your guesses. With five options, each guessed blank is worth 0.2 marks on average. If you solve 150 and mark the other 50 at random, you gain about 10 marks. Ten marks is the gap between 99 and 99.5. Students who leave blanks give those marks away.
One way to reach 130 or more:
| Section | Solve | Correct |
|---|---|---|
| Logical Reasoning (75) | 58 | 50 |
| Abstract Reasoning (25) | 22 | 19 |
| Quantitative Aptitude (50) | 35 | 29 |
| Verbal Ability and RC (50) | 40 | 34 |
| Total | 155 | 132 |
Add about 9 marks from the 45 guessed blanks and you finish near 141.

MBA CET syllabus: the topics that carry the most marks
| Section | Topics to study first |
|---|---|
| Logical Reasoning | Seating arrangement, puzzles, syllogisms, coded inequalities, input-output, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction sense, data sufficiency, critical reasoning |
| Abstract Reasoning | Figure series, odd one out, figure analogy, mirror and water images, paper folding and cutting, counting figures, dice and cubes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Percentages and profit, ratio and mixtures, averages and ages, interest, time and work, time, speed and distance, simplification, quadratic comparison, mensuration and probability, data interpretation |
| Verbal Ability and RC | Reading comprehension, grammar and error spotting, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, vocabulary, idioms, spellings and cloze tests |
What a recent paper looked like, by the slot analysis in Crack MBA CET in 60 Days:
- Verbal: 20 RC questions from five passages, about 10 grammar, 7 vocabulary, 7 fill in the blanks and 5 idioms.
- Abstract Reasoning: 8 series questions, 8 figure counting, 5 pattern comparison, with a few on paper folding.
- Logical Reasoning: a few big puzzles and many single questions on blood relations, directions and input-output.
- Quant: 25 to 30 arithmetic questions, with heavy decimals that call for approximation.
Verbal and Abstract Reasoning were the highest-scoring sections. Quant and the long puzzles ate the most time.
Section-wise strategy to score 99+ percentile in MBA CET
Abstract Reasoning: 25 quick marks
Students who come from CAT ignore this section, since CAT has nothing like it. That is a mistake. Abstract Reasoning takes 15 minutes and can give you 20 marks.
- Learn the common rules: rotation by 45 or 90 degrees, mirror flips, elements added or removed, shading that shifts in a cycle.
- Track one element across the figures. Don't try to watch the whole figure.
- In figure counting, count the small shapes first, then the larger ones built from them.
- Practise 25 timed questions a day. Speed here comes from pattern memory.
Target: 20 or more correct out of 25.
Verbal Ability and RC: read the questions first
- For RC, read the questions before the passage and read the passage once.
- Do the grammar, vocabulary and idiom questions at 20 to 30 seconds each.
- Learn idioms by meaning. A literal reading gives a wrong answer.
- Keep a spelling and vocabulary list and read it once a day in the last two weeks.
Target: 40 or more correct out of 50, in about 35 minutes.
Quantitative Aptitude: approximate
- Arithmetic gives more than half the section. Start with time, speed and distance, profit and loss, and percentages.
- Options tend to sit far apart, so round heavy decimals.
- In quadratic comparison, find the roots and compare. Don't plug in values.
- CAT-level practice makes you accurate and slow. Practise easy questions against a clock.
Target: 35 or more correct out of 50, in about 45 minutes.
Logical Reasoning: single questions before puzzles
This section has 75 questions, the largest block in the paper.
- Do the single questions first: blood relations, directions, coding, syllogisms, inequalities.
- In coded inequalities, copy each symbol with care. Reading "≥" as ">" is the most common slip.
- A five-question puzzle is worth your time if you can crack it in about four minutes. If you have no grid after 60 seconds, move on and return later.
- Assume a person's gender only if the puzzle states it.
Target: 60 or more correct out of 75, in about 50 minutes.
Your 150-minute plan for MBA CET
| Order | Section | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Abstract Reasoning | 15 |
| 2 | Verbal Ability and RC | 35 |
| 3 | Quantitative Aptitude | 45 |
| 4 | Logical Reasoning | 50 |
| 5 | Mark an answer for each blank | 5 |
Work in two rounds inside each section. In round one, solve each easy question and mark the medium ones. In round two, return to the marked questions. Hold a hard limit of 60 seconds on any single question.
Start marking blanks at the 145-minute point, without fail. A puzzle you are close to cracking is worth less than 30 unmarked bubbles.
Two other orders are worth one mock each: Logical Reasoning first if you want a fresh mind for puzzles, and Verbal first if reading is your strength. The MBA CET time strategy guide compares them in detail.

How long does it take to prepare for MBA CET?
| Your situation | Time needed | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| You prepared for CAT, XAT or CMAT | 6 to 8 weeks | Speed, puzzles, Abstract Reasoning, the zero-blank habit |
| You start fresh, with good basics | About 60 days at 5 to 7 hours a day | Reasoning basics, arithmetic, then timed sets and mocks |
| You start fresh as a beginner | 4 to 6 months at 2 to 3 hours a day | School arithmetic, grammar and simple puzzles first |
MBA CET comes last in the season, months after CAT and CMAT. If you took those exams, your quant and reading are built. Your work now is to change gears: from choosing questions to answering all of them, and from three minutes a question to 45 seconds.
A simple eight-week shape for students coming from other exams:
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Reasoning basics and arithmetic at speed |
| 3 to 4 | Puzzles, data interpretation, the full Abstract Reasoning syllabus |
| 5 to 6 | Timed sets and mocks |
| 7 to 8 | Mocks and revision |
A four-phase study plan for MBA CET
| Phase | Goal | Main work | Mocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build | Fix basics | Reasoning basics, arithmetic, Abstract Reasoning rules | A diagnostic mock, then one a week |
| 2. Strengthen | Add the slower topics | Puzzles, inequalities, data interpretation, RC speed | One a week |
| 3. Speed | Cut your time for each question | Timed sets of 20 questions, sectional tests | One every three days |
| 4. Perform | Peak on exam day | Full mocks, the zero-blank habit, revision | Two in the last week |
A day for a full-time student:
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 7 to 9 am | Logical Reasoning: two puzzles and 30 questions |
| 9:30 to 10:30 am | Abstract Reasoning: 25 timed questions |
| 11 am to 12:30 pm | Quant: one concept and 30 questions |
| 2 to 3 pm | Verbal: two RCs and 20 questions |
| 5 to 6 pm | One timed sectional |
| 8 to 9 pm | Error log and revision |
A working professional can cover the plan in three and a half hours: reasoning from 6 to 7:30 am, 20 vocabulary or grammar questions at lunch, quant from 9 to 10 pm, and a full mock at the exam's slot time on Sunday.

How many mocks should you take for MBA CET?
Take 12 to 14 full mocks and a steady run of timed topic tests. Each mock should end with zero blanks, so the habit is automatic by exam day.
Useful drills between mocks:
- 20 questions in 30 minutes on one topic, then 20 in 25, then 20 in 20.
- A Logical Reasoning sectional: 75 questions in 55 minutes.
- An Abstract Reasoning sectional: 25 questions in 15 minutes.
After each mock, note:
| Item | Note it for each mock |
|---|---|
| Score out of 200 | |
| Questions solved in each section | |
| Accuracy on solved questions | |
| Time in each section | |
| Puzzles left unsolved | |
| Blanks at the end | Target: 0 |
| Silly mistakes | |
| Next three actions |
Use both attempts
The State CET Cell now holds MBA CET twice in a cycle and counts the better of your two scores. Sit both.
Treat the first attempt as a full, prepared attempt. Between the two, repair your slowest section and take three or four more mocks. A second attempt can't lower your result, and one better slot can move you up by a decimal that changes your college.

Approximate all-India percentiles from recent CAP rounds, as listed in Crack MBA CET in 60 Days. State seats close a little lower.
The top of this list is also the best value in Indian management education. JBIMS, SIMSREE and PUMBA are government colleges with low fees and strong placements in Mumbai and Pune.
How admission works: the CAP
Colleges admit MBA CET candidates through the Centralised Admission Process. It has no group discussion and no interview. The steps:
- Register for the CAP and upload your documents.
- Get your documents verified.
- Check the merit list.
- Fill in the option form with your college preferences in order.
- See your allotment in each round, and choose to freeze, float or slide.
- Report to the college and confirm your seat.
Three facts about the CAP shape your plan.
- The merit list uses your entrance score alone. Class 10, class 12 and graduation marks carry no weight. If your academics are weak, this is the most forgiving route to a top college in India.
- Seats split by domicile. At government and aided institutes, 85 percent of seats go to Maharashtra candidates and 15 percent to all-India candidates.
- The form matters as much as the score. Students lose seats each year by missing a round or ordering their options badly.
The MBA CET CAP process guide walks through each round.
Eight mistakes that keep you below 99
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leaving blanks | There is no negative marking, so mark all 200 |
| 2 | Staying on one puzzle | 60-second rule, then return later |
| 3 | Ignoring Abstract Reasoning | It is 25 quick marks |
| 4 | Reading RC passages slowly | Questions first, passage once |
| 5 | Practising only CAT-level quant | Practise easy questions against a clock |
| 6 | Missing registration | Watch the State CET Cell site from the start of the year |
| 7 | Missing a CAP round | Track each round's dates |
| 8 | Taking no full mocks | 12 to 14 mocks, each with zero blanks |
Frequently asked questions
How many marks are required for 99 percentile in MBA CET?
About 124 to 133 marks out of 200 have matched the 99th percentile in recent results. The figure has stayed close to 130 for several years. Aim for 135 or more in mocks for a safe 99.
How many marks are needed for JBIMS in MBA CET?
JBIMS closes at about 99.99 percentile for all-India seats, which has meant roughly 155 to 165 marks out of 200. Maharashtra state seats close a little lower, at about 99.94 percentile.
Is there negative marking in MAH MBA CET?
No. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, and a wrong answer or a blank earns 0. You should mark an answer for all 200 questions. With five options, each guess is worth 0.2 marks on average.
How many questions should I attempt in MBA CET?
Mark all 200. Aim to solve 150 to 170 of them properly at about 85 percent accuracy, and guess the rest in the last five minutes. Solving 150 at 85 percent gives about 128 marks before guesses.
How many attempts does MBA CET allow?
The State CET Cell holds the exam twice in a cycle and counts the better of your two scores. Sit both attempts. Check the information brochure on the official site for the rules of your cycle.
Is MBA CET easier than CAT?
The questions are easier, and there is no negative marking. The difficulty is pace: 45 seconds for each question across 200 questions. The exam also has Abstract Reasoning, which CAT doesn't test, and its top colleges need 99.9 percentile or more.
Can I crack MBA CET in 2 months?
Yes. Sixty days at five to seven hours a day is enough if your arithmetic and reading are sound. Spend the first month on reasoning, arithmetic and Abstract Reasoning rules, and the second on timed sets and 12 or more full mocks.
Do class 10 and 12 marks matter for JBIMS?
Not for the CAP merit list, which uses your entrance score alone. You need the minimum graduation marks for eligibility. There is no group discussion or interview for CAP seats.
Which section should I attempt first in MBA CET?
Many high scorers start with Abstract Reasoning for 15 minutes, then Verbal, then Quant, and keep Logical Reasoning for last. Test that order and one other in mocks, and keep the one that gives the higher score.
Can candidates from outside Maharashtra apply to JBIMS?
Yes. At government and aided institutes, 15 percent of seats are open to all-India candidates through the CAP. Those seats close at higher percentiles than the state seats, so candidates from outside Maharashtra need about 99.99 percentile for JBIMS.
